Teen actors trials and tribulations in new play

Written byNATALIE WAKEFIELD

A COMIC exploration of the trials and tribulations of beign a teenager is the focus of a youth theatre production in Derby.

Ruckus in the Garden, by David Farr is at Derby Theatre for just three performances on Friday, April 5 and Saturday 6.

With a nod to Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Ruckus in the Garden tells the tale of two rival schools who meet on a trip to the stately home and gardens of Cecil Fortescue.

Numerous fights break out between some unlikely opponents and the girls are just as feisty as the boys - however, when the statues in the garden come to life, and start playing tricks on the teens, things get really complicated and some home truths are revealed.

With an array of characters, including hopeless and sometimes hysterical romantics, a pacifist who gets beaten up, and a garden that is much more alive than at first meets the eye; some issues are wrapped up in the comedy and mayhem which allows us an insight into the lives and pressures of young people today.

Derby Theatre Youth Theatre is led by Junk Shop Theatre Company with Derby Theatre and was formed towards the end of 2012. The 50-strong group’s first rehearsal was in January. More information is available by telephoning 01332 593939.
