A WOMAN thought to have been left distraught by the end of a relationship killed herself in a hotel room at the M6 Stafford services, a coroner has ruled.
Gina Kakouri, 24, was sadly found hanging from a shower rail in the Days Inn Hotel on the southbound services on June 12, an inquest in Cannock heard last week.
Assistant Staffordshire South coroner Margaret Jones recorded the verdict that Miss Kakouri, who lived in Warrington, Cheshire, had killed herself.
Her devastated father Stan Kakouri said: “We were very close but did not see this coming. There is a gaping hole in my life.”
He said his daughter, who worked as a travel agent, was generally a happy person but did have moods from time to time. He said he often felt there was a side of her life she could not talk about with him.
Mr Kakouri said he later found out she was bitter about a break-up and was upset about her ex-boyfriend being best man at her cousin’s wedding.
He said she had also recently been upset by the death of a grandparent and the fact her own parents’ had recently had bouts of illness.
He added: “Her best friend confided in me that Gina had been pregnant and had had an abortion, although there is no evidence of this and Gina did not say anything.
“I am heartbroken.”
The inquest was told Miss Kakouri bought a helium gas canister and parcel tape prior to her death, both of which were found in her room.
Detective Constable Neil Johnson, of Cannock CID, said Days Inn staff member Tracy Lewis checked Miss Kakouri’s room as she had failed to check out and found it locked. A maintenance worker opened it and in the bathroom she found Miss Kakouri and fled the room.
DC Johnson said there were two photographs of Miss Kakouri with a man and a letter.
