WOMEN in Stafford have been warned to take sensible precautions after a man grabbed a lone female near the town centre.

The woman, who had parked off Newport Road in Martin Drive, Castlefields, was walking through a wooded area towards the town centre when a man grabbed her from behind at approximately 8.40am on Tuesday.

The woman became very distressed and the man, described as white, in his 30s, medium height and build with cropped dark hair, fled.

Inspector Rob Pilling, from Stafford Local Policing Team said the incident was being taken seriously.

"At the time there would have been heavy traffic going to and from Stafford town centre and we would appeal to anyone who may have seen this man to come forward," he said. “We would suggest that women who are alone take normal, sensible precautions and are aware of their surroundings. "

The woman was unharmed in the incident.

He said extra officers would be patrolling the area to offer reassurance.

Anyone with any information is urged to call 101, quoting incident number 294 or Crimestoppers anonymously, on 0800 111 555.
