WORKERS were sent home from Stafford’s Perkins Engines today as the company released nearly 60 members of staff.

A spokesman for Perkins told the Newsletter: “We have today released 59 agency workers from our Stafford site.

“This is a result of a re-evaluation of the number of agency workers needed to meet our customers' requirements in early 2014.”

“Perkins uses a flexible workforce, made up of agency workers at many of its global facilities, to be able to react quickly to business conditions,” she said. “The flexible workforce fluctuates up or down with variations in demand.

“Our priority is to take the actions that position us for long-term success and profitable growth and ensure we are positively positioned for 2014 and beyond.”

She said another 79 agency workers would be temporarily released on Friday December 20 but that they would return to the company on Monday January 13, 2014.

“The holiday allocation for agency workers is expected to cover majority of the three week suspension,” she said.
