Young Brewood chef cooks up a treat for competition

A BREWOOD teenager is through to the regional final of a national cooking competition for 11-17-year-old Rotary Club members.

Rebecca Hale, a year 9 student at St. Dominic's High School for Girls, beat 10 people from North Staffordshire to qualify for the regional level of the RIBI Young Chef competition.

The teenager, who entered the contest through Rotary Club of Brewood, will join fellow winner Katy Leek from Stoke-on-Trent at the next stage on Saturday at Stoke-on-Trent FE College.

Rebecca said: “I enjoy cooking because I like creating a plate of food that everyone will enjoy.

“I think Young Chef is a great way of getting younger children together and making a piece of food that people enjoy.”

In the district level, competitors had 80 minutes to plan, prepare, cook and serve a main course and dessert for two people on a budget of £10.

Rebecca’s cooked golden chicken with braised greens and potato gratin followed by a melt in the middle chocolate pudding with 'oranged' crème fraiche and spun sugar.

Young Chef Competition Organiser, Charles Freeman, said: “The interest in cooking and baking has never been greater in the country and the local Rotary clubs wanted to challenge young people to show how good they are at producing a two course meal.

“We know that there are a lot of highly talented young chefs in the area and we saw the best in action in this competition."
