Councillor Ray Sutherland was confirmed as the town’s first citizen on Saturday morning, before attending a service at St Mary’s Church and a parade through the town centre. The procession also celebrated the 400th anniversary of Stafford’s Mayoralty. Servicepeople and organisations who have been granted the freedom of the borough exercised their right to march through the town, cheered on by a crowd of spectators. Soldiers from the 22 Signal Regiment, based at Beacon Barracks, joined colleagues from RAF Tactical Supply Wing and HMS Collingwood. The 3rd Mercian regiment (Staffords) were also represented, as were Staffordshire Police and Staffordshire Fire Service. Community groups including the Royal British Legion, Sea and Army Cadets, Guides and Burgesses also joined in the fun, which included street theatre, face painting and children’s rides.
