Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney scored twice to ensure David Beckham's Old Trafford return was a losing one as Manchester United eased into the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-0 victory (7-2 on aggregate) over AC Milan.

Introduced as a substitute just after the hour, the tie was already lost when Beckham made his entrance for AC Milan.

Beckham wraps himself in green and gold

David Beckham wrapped a green and gold scarf around his neck in support of Manchester United's fans after an emotional reunion at Old Trafford.

Beckham and his AC Milan side were on the end of a 4-0 second-leg thrashing as United cruised through to the quarter finals of the Champions League, but he still got a rapturous reception, especially when at the end he donned the scarf which has become a symbol of the supporters' anger at United's owners, the Glazers, and the club's £709m debt.

Bolt earns Laureus gong

Usain BoltUsain Bolt was named Laureus World Sportsman of the Year for the second year in succession on Wednesday, while Britain's Jenson Button was honoured for winning the Formula One world title.

Bolt won the 100 and 200 metres at the World Championships last year, breaking his own world records in both for good measure, and also took gold with his Jamaican team-mates in the 4x100m relay. The Jamaican superstar is the first man ever to hold the world and Olympic 100 and 200m titles at the same time following his staggering performances in Berlin and Beijing.

Pompey dismiss 85 staff

PortsmouthPortsmouth have been forced to make 85 staff redundant as a result of ongoing cost-cutting measures under the administration of UHY Hacker Young.

The administrators' spokeman, Andrew Andronikou, revealed the news today but insisted the club will be able to stave off questions from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs over the validity of the administration process and that he is receiving "enquiries on a daily basis" regarding a takeover.
