THE Diamonds edged a keenly contested Stafford and District Netball League division one fixture against Kingfisher Gems.
Gems took an early lead, thanks to some good passing play. However great defence from Diamonds soon saw them get back in contention, especially thanks to their goalkeeper.
The game proved to be a very evenly matched contest, Diamonds just leading 16-14 at half time.
Gems started the second half strongly, but Diamonds countered with a change around and, after a nail-bitingly close final quarter with superb passing from both teams, Diamonds just edged out winners 32-28.
Top side Stafford Ladies took on second from bottom Spittal Brook in the next match and extended their impressive form with a 48-13 success.
There was a fast-paced start from both teams but the Ladies' more consistent shooting saw them leading 25 to 6 at half time.
Brook had a change round and came out fighting after the break, but the Ladies remained solid in attack and despite a valiant effort from Brook, they could never really match the experienced Ladies side.
The final fixture between Touchstone and Sapphires was a hard-fought and closely matched game conducted at a furious pace. It was neck and neck for the first quarter, but Touchstone settled down and began to edge away from Sapphires thanks to their greater consistency, leading 16-10 at half time.
There was great shooting at both ends, fighting for every ball, with some great interceptions by Sapphires goal defence and player of the match Emma Fearnside.
Sapphires' Emily Jackson put away some great shots under fierce pressure from the Touchstone defence, but in the end, Sapphires just could not interrupt the flow of the more experienced Touchstone side and they emerged 31-20 winners. Kay Williams was singled out as Touchstone's player of the match.
Just one league fixture was played in division two, while two friendly matches also took place.
On the league front, Satellites edged a thriller against the Aces 22-21. The Aces trailed after the first quarter, before hitting back to take a 13-12 interval advantage.
Satellites were still in arrears going in to the final quarter, before claiming a narrow win. In one of the friendly matches, Emeralds defeated Rubies 40-14.
