RUGELEY council house residents are set to see their rents rise by an average of £3.22 per week this year.

Cannock Chase Council has said the increase is "out of its hands" as it is determined in accordance with Government policy.

The rent rise for 2014-15 will be considered at a council meeting on Thursday, February 12.

Government policy requires rents to be set with a prescribed formula. Where current rents differ from formula rents, the council is required to increase these, within a defined limit, to match up with the formula rent.

The council cabinet has previously agreed to replace the current 50 week rent year with a 52 week rent year, starting from 2014-15.

But tenants who want to continue having a two week "rent-free" period can continue with this through individual agreements with the council.
