PROPOSALS for a high speed rail station in Stoke on Trent would downgrade Stafford to the level of Thomas the Tank Engine, a leading councillor has said.

Stafford borough councillors voiced strong objections to the city's alternative HS2 route proposals, submitted as part of HS2 Ltd's route consultation which closed on Friday.

Councillor Frances Beatty, cabinet member for planning and regeneration, said: "There are real worries over Stoke's proposal. It would mean Stafford becomes something of a sideline, a Thomas the Tank Engine chugging along."
